IAGI urges government to complete Water Resources Legislation

Indonesia Professional Geologists Association (IAGI) urged the government
to modify the Legislative Plan (LP) for Water Resource (WR) because the
current draft only regulates surface water and makes no reference to
underground sources.

IAGI Chairman for Environmental Geology sector, Adurrachman Assegaf said
that from the Draft Law makes no provision for water management on the
whole.

We (IAGI) propose the LP to be modified in order to resolve water resource
problem as a whole, said Asseggaf in his discussion with reporters in
Jakarta Tuesday (October 21).

He said that the association proposed 6 points to complete the Water
Resources Draft. First, a proportional arrangement of water sources i.e.
rain water, surface water, ground water and inland sea water.

Second, water resource management must be executed based on ground water
basin structure. Third, ground water basin determination must be based on
hydrology limits which will give a clearly defined shape of the basin.
Fourth, socialize (I.e. educate and disseminate) the ground water basin
terminology to all society levels.

Fifth, soil water management process to incorporate technological factors
as part of the management. Sixth, water resource management approach must
be unified and coordinated between concerned parties and according to their
competence.

The President of IAGI, Andang Bachtiar added that these six recommendations
were ratified by the IAGI member panel meeting in Bandung on 10 October
said Bisnis Indonesia..

According to him, the proposal was based on all professional geologists
concern with the future use of water resources for the benefit of the
Indonesian people.

This WR Law is very necessary for the people in the future so it will
influence the water resource management as a whole. The (current draft) Law
may not be unable to give accurate and better answers to people, he
stated.****
