Herman Norwegian seabed logging survey Electro Magnetic GeoServices (EMGS) is set to kick off a new wave of electro magnetic exploration in preparation for Norway's 18th Licensing Round. Using its innovative SeaBed Logging (SBL) technique the company will begin a multi-client deepwater survey on 15 June. EMGS aims to help companies increase the probability of detecting hydrocarbons with SBL, a marine electromagnetic method used to map the subsurface resistivity from the sea floor. Company president Terje Eidesmo said: "A hydrocarbon-filled reservoir will typically have high resistivity compared to shale and water filled reservoirs. SBL has the unique potential of distinguishing between hydrocarbons and water." EMGS aims to plan, acquire, process and interpret SBL surveys. Eidesmo added: "While seismic surveying is based on sound waves and a proven method of defining structures and identifying possible reservoirs, SBL is based on electromagnetic waves and can define whether the reservoir contains hydrocarbons or water. As a result, the two technologies are complementary in the exploration phase." He said the technology had considerable cost benefits for oil prospecting companies. "If you were looking at several prospects and considering which one to choose for exploration, you could run SBL over all of them to help you make that decision. You could make millions of dollars of savings," he claimed. The technology has already been fully tested over a known hydrocarbon accumulation offshore Angola as well as in Norwegian waters.
