Forum Sedimentologist Indonesia (FOSI), the sedimentology commission of the
Indonesian Geologist Association (IAGI) will conduct an Evening Talk with
Subject Oligo-Miocene Carbonates of the East Java Basin : Regional Facies
Definition and Recent Significant Discoveries, on Friday, May 21, 2004 from
17.00 - 18.00 in Tamnak Thai Restaurant, Jl. H.O.S. Cokroaminoto No. 78,
Jakarta Pusat

SPEAKER : Awang H. Satyana, BPMIGAS

Abstract
Prospectivity of the Oligo-Miocene carbonates of the East Java Basin have
been proven since early 1970s. However, the significance of these
carbonates as oil and gas producers have not obtained full attention until
the late of 1990s when un-interrupted significant discoveries within these
carbonates started to take place.

Located at the active southeastern margin of the Sundaland, the East Java
Basin has recorded an active geodynamic history. The basin developed from
an oceanic basin in front of the Late Cretaceous subduction zone to
presently a backarc basin behind the volcanic arc. The basin was segmented
into a number of horsts and grabens accommodating the deposition of the
Paleogene synrift and postrift sediments as well as the carbonate
development. Sea transgression during the Oligo-Miocene resulted in the
development of carbonates comprising the Kujung-Prupuh-Tuban-Rancak
formations.

Two modes of carbonate development can be recognized : (1) deposition on
the land-attached platform, and (2) deposition on the offshore isolated
platforms. These two sedimentary domains are bordered by the Oligo-Miocene
shelf edge which presently occupies the northern coastal lines of the East
Java and Madura Island. To the north of the shelf-edge, the deposition of
carbonates was controlled by segmented basements of the land-attached
platform. Three facies are recognized : fringing reef at rim of basement,
basinal lime mud mound, and patchreef over platform. Along the shelf-edge
area, high-energy shelf-edge barrier reef developed. To the south of the
shelf-edge barrier, the carbonates of pinnacle reefs grew above the
segmented isolated platforms.

In the last five years, continuing significant oil and gas discoveries have
been taking place within all carbonate facies. Deliberate definition of the
carbonate facies, integrated with the knowledge of the basin's
stratigraphy, structure, and geochemistry, has enhanced the exploration
success in this area.

Biography
Awang Harun Satyana graduated from Geology Department of Padjadjaran
University in Bandung in 1989. He worked for Pertamina Exploration from
1990 to 1997 as Exploration Geologist for Kalimantan and Eastern Indonesia
areas. From 1997 to 2000, he worked for JOB Pertamina and Santa Fe as Sr.
Exploration Geologist for Salawati, Papua area. From 2000 to 2002, he
worked for Pertamina Management of Production Sharing as Sr. Regional
Geologist for whole Indonesia areas. Since the end of 2002, he joined Badan
Pelaksana Migas (Indonesia's Implementing Body for Upstream Oil and Gas
Businesses) as Head of Geology for Java and South Sumatra Region. Awang is
a member of IAGI, IPA, FOSI, AAPG, and EAGE and actively contributes
papers for national and international conferences and journals. As much as
35 papers covering various subjects, 5 articles, 4 invited talks, and 1
book of course manual have been published. Some of his papers were given
awards. In the last four years, he witnessed and was involved in the
successes of companies exploring the Oligo-Miocene carbonates of East Java
and tried to integrate the companies' data into regional geologic
synthesis of these prolific reservoirs.
