PETRONAS recently opened the invitation to candidates to apply for its Education Sponsorship Programme based on their forecast Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2004 results. From the overwhelming response of 3,300 applications, some 1,400 candidates were shortlisted to attend this year's EduCamp which was held at the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) over two sessions, from 6 ? 8 December and 9 ? 11 December.
The third to be held, the EduCamp is organised by the Education Division, and is aimed at selecting the best candidates for the Education Sponsorship Programme. It is designed to be highly interactive and informative, and serves as a platform for participants to increase their level of self-awareness, evaluate career options, build self-confidence and improve social skills and teamwork. This programme also enables students to gain insights to the various career opportunities that await them at PETRONAS, should they be successful in this rigorous selection process.
During the opening ceremony yesterday at UTP, Education Division Vice-President, Dr Rosti Saruwono, in his speech emphasised the importance of selecting scholars who not only have academic excellence, "but also possess a fairly high level of 'soft skills', such as leadership, communication, interpersonal and analytical skills".
"Against the background of a competitive international business environment, PETRONAS needs...young leaders who are well-rounded, brilliant and matured, and possess a high degree of initiative, creativity and who continuously strive for excellence in their endeavors," he continued.
Meanwhile, an EduCamp session was also held simultaneously in Kuching, Sarawak, where some 100 candidates participated in this selection programme. The session was opened yesterday by Sarawak Regional Office General Manager, Encik Ahmad Hj Rahmad.
During the three-day session, students will be exposed to various activities that test their social and communication skills as well as getting them to be more focused. Divided into smaller groups of 25, the students will be guided by selected facilitators comprising PETRONAS staff from various Business Units and Operating Units who had earlier undergone special training at PERMATA.
By encompassing consolidated values, the EduCamp is recognised as an effective approach to establish the finest candidates for the PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme.
