Keep drilling, Shell advised
BY SIM LEOI LEOI
PUTRAJAYA: Petroleum giant Shell, which has been awarded the concession by
Malaysia to drill for oil and gas in the Sulawesi Sea, should go ahead with
exploratory works despite a protest lodged by Indonesia.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said there was no reason for
Shell to stop work or for Malaysia to be alarmed and that the protest by
Indonesia would be duly noted.
"We have received the protest and we will respond accordingly and issue a
statement reaffirming our stand.
"But any protest from Indonesia should not stop us. These protests are quite
normal and are part of the diplomatic process," he said, adding that
Malaysia had also lodged similar protests against Indonesia awarding oil
concessions to Italian company Eni and US oil firm Unocal last year.
ILLEGAL OPERATION: Mohd Roslan inspecting the equipment used to transfer the
gas from domestic tanks into industrial tanks at the factory lot in Port
Klang.
However, Syed Hamid said, Malaysia and Indonesia needed to resolve the issue
and reach a "win-win" solution.
"We hope this issue can be resolved soon. But until a solution is found, we
will go on with what we are doing," he said after receiving contributions
from the Malay Chamber of Commerce and Protas Sdn Bhd for the Asian Tsunami
Fund at his office here yesterday.
He was commenting on reports quoting oil and gas director-general in
Indonesia's Energy and Natural Resources Department, Iin Arifin Takhyan, as
saying that both the Ambalat and East Ambalat blocks to the east of
Kalimantan had long been under Indonesian administration and that contracts
for their development had been awarded to other companies.
Iin had claimed that the blocks were within Indonesia's territory while
Malaysia perceived these as within its waters after being awarded the
Sipadan and Ligitan islands.
Malaysia had said that its continental shelf and a federal territorial
parameters map issued in 1979 both showed the country held sovereignty over
the two blocks.

Lha saya pikir yang mau merebut wilayah Indonesia itu Amrik atau
Australia lho, kok Malaysia sih?
Tapi ini peluang yang bagus bagi pemerintahan SBY-JK untuk menggalang
nasionalisme bangsa Indonesia. Ada sebuah "musuh bersama" untuk
menyatukan orang Indonesia sekarang.
