SUMATRA STRATIGRAPHY WORKSHOP 2005 BACKGROUND The success of hydrocarbon and other minerals exploration and production cannot be separated from the development of the geologic concepts. Stratigraphy is one of the most important geologic concepts in hydrocarbon and mineral exploration. It dependslargely on the data and concepts which often evolve through time. Better understanding of the stratigraphy often offers new business opportunities and in turn, new business opportunities often refine our stratigraphic understanding. This process has been widely recognized in the industry. A few years ago, Stratigraphy Workshops focusing only for Java Stratigraphy was conducted by IAGI (Indonesian Association of Geologists) to review and update the stratigraphy of Java by including recent data, concepts and other related findings. Other than to discuss the Stratigraphy of Java, the workshops have other purpose to revisit the Lexicon of The Stratigraphy of Indonesia, especially for Java Region. The updated, revised Lexicon was then launched in Stratigraphy Forum in Bandung in 2004. Accordingly, inspired by preceding accomplishment of the Stratigraphy of Java, the Indonesian Association of Geologists (IAGI) will conduct "Sumatra Stratigraphy Workshop" to review, update and revisit the Stratigraphy of Sumatra. The committee invite competent resources in all areas within Sumatra Region to the workshop. We expect that each area within Sumatra region is represented both in term of works that have been done and experts in that particular area.
