ABSTRACT
"Carbonate Petrophysics"
The petroleum industry is increasingly reliant on more effective
reservoir characterization for reducing the risks associated with new
field development. This is more significant for the carbonate reservoirs
because of it's inherent complexity in terms of pore structure,
difficulty in estimating the porosity because of complex mineralogy,
wettability issues etc.
Carbonate reservoirs can be colossal though their pores can be
microscopic. Matrix permeability can be immeasurably low while fluid
flow like rivers through fractures. Evaluation techniques that succeed
in sandstone reservoirs may or may not be applicable in the carbonate
reservoirs.
The present talk would focus on the ways to evaluate carbonate
reservoirs at the scale of cores and well logs. Methods would range from
tried-and-true to experimental and represent a subset of current
initiatives. New multi sensor interpretation techniques for carbonate
reservoirs would be discussed. The talk would summarize some of the
techniques used for estimating the cementation exponent. Most of these
techniques would be illustrated with examples.
