Fire breaks out, reactors shut down at nuclear power plant after huge quake
Three reactors at a nuclear power plant in Niigata Prefecture
automatically shut down and a power transformer caught fire immediately
after a powerful earthquake jolted the area on Monday, Tokyo Electric
Power Co. (TEPCO) officials said.
The fire broke out in the transformer that supplies electricity to the
facility. Firefighters have the blaze under control, while the reactors
remain shut down. TEPCO officials said no radiation leaked from the
reactors.
The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant is located in the Niigata
Prefecture city of Kashiwazaki, where the temblor registered upper 6 on
the 7-point Japanese intensity scale.
All bullet trains on the Joetsu Shinkansen Line between Tokyo and
Niigata have been cancelled due to the quake, while services on the
Tohoku and Nagano Shinkansen have been temporarily suspended, East
Japan Railway Co. officials said. (Mainichi)
