*Regional Kutai Basin and Mahakam Delta*
*Fieldtrip Overview
*The trip is intended for geologists and engineers, who are interested in
stratigraphy and reservoir sedimentology of the second most hydrocarbon- and
coal- prolific basin in Indonesia, Kutai Basin, East Kalimantan. The field
trip area will cover Northern Modern Mahakam Delta, Samarinda Area, Semberah
& Bontang Area, and Balikpapan-Pulau Balang area and if permitted, some oil
and gas fields along the Sanga-sanga trend, Kutai Basin.
The trip will also includes some visit to the modern Mahakam Delta, and
always refer all the outcrop stratigraphy and sedimentology to the "deltaic"
models, including the modern Mahakam Delta, Marangkayu Delta and Wain Delta
in arround Balikpapan vicinity. Outcrops of fluvial, tide, and even
wave-dominated delta deposits will be visited by participants to give an
overview of the deltaic model diversity of the Kutai Basin Miocene
stratigraphy and to be compared with recent Kutai Basin stratigraphy
especially with Mahakam Delta. Examples of Lowstand, Highstand, and
Transgressive delta systems related to sequence stratigraphy will be
discussed with references to the published lithostratigraphic nomenclatures.
The outcrop will be visited 5 days mostly sandstone reservoirs, with varied
facies, geometry, heterogeneity, and depositional environment. The facies
covers sandstones from braided river associated with fan-delta system to
classic fluvial-tidal dominated distributary channels in delta plain, to
deep-marine turbidite sands associated with lowstand delta.
Special discussion on reservoir geometry will also be conducted, especially
on the outcrops, which shows 3-dimensional geometrical views. In the modern
Mahakam stop, we will also do some coring in order to know and compare the
modern stratigraphic succession in a certain depositional environment such
as in head pass, side bar, tidal channel, delta front coal, Marangkayu spit,
beach, tidal flat, fluvial channel and wave dominated delta in Muara Badak.
A slide show session and discussion will be conducted at the night after
dinner in order to give a refresh, summary and regional feature of the
outcrops in the day we visited.
To release the stress after daylight dealing with the complexity of the
stratigraphy and reservoir sedimentology of the outcrops, several dinner and
cultural programs will be conducted during the evening. This will include
"karaoke dinner", world famous chili-crab dinner in Samarinda, and
Dayak-dance cultural night.
