Sungguh besar sumberdaya sebesar 107-320 BBO (bilyun barel oil) itu. Berikut bandingannya. Seluruh cadangan lapangan minyak Indonesia punya cadangan terbukti dan potensial sekitar 9 BBO (terbuktinya sekitar 4,5 BBO). Seluruh prospek dan lead Indonesia (hampir 650 struktur) punya sumberdaya total sekitar 60 BBO. Kalau di West Aceh offshore Indonesia ada sumberdaya hidrokarbon sampai sebesar 107-320 BBO sungguh menakjubkan. Mungkin lokasi riset BPPT dan BGR Jerman ini ada di Cekungan Sibolga, cekungan depan busur (forearc) di Sumatera. Eksplorasi selama ini di sana hanya di bagian selatannya yang menemukan cadangan gas biogenik tidak ekonomis dari terumbu Miosen melalui pemboran2 di struktur Suma, Singkel, dan Ibu Suma oleh Union Oil dan Caltex. Literatur saat ini mengatakan cekungan ini punya kualitas reservoir buruk (karena terlalu jauh dari sumbernya untuk Paleogen, untuk Neogen disuplai dari tinggian volcanic arc dan melange risge) dan source yang kurang bagus (karena open marine, oxygenated), sejarah termal yang dingin (low geothermal gradient, ciri kebanyakan forearc basin). Tetapi kalau benar ada liquid HCs sampai ratusan bilyunan begitu, sungguh menarik dan harus banyak yang dipelajari. Kelihatannya ini masih sangat prematur, tetapi perlu diklarifikasi. In its press statement on Saturday, the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) and its counterpart Bundesanstalt fur Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) said the unproven reserve might reach 107 billion barrels of oil or gas as a minimum. The statement said the maximum of the reserve could reach 320 billion barrels. As a comparison, the proven reserve of Saudi Arabia is around 264 billion barrels, the largest in the world, while the Banyu Urip block in Cepu, Central Java, contains around 450 million barrels. The BPPT said the discovery was apparently unintended and the primary aim of the research was to map the geological construction of the surrounding sea in Aceh after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. However, through a research vessel, Sonne, the agencies managed to locate an underwater basin which may contain hydrocarbon. The research and preliminary finding remains subject to further tests to determine the actual reserve of the basin.
