Dengan hormat,
Maaf pak/bu Admin, apakah laman web ini http://iagi.or.id sudah diganti? Saya
coba 'google', adanya malah http://iagi.org yang bermarkas di US. Seandainya

Wassalam,

Charles Darwin’s Fieldwork in the Highlands

Date: 26-29 June 2009
Venue: Glen Roy, Scotland

Darwin returned from the Beagle voyage identifying himself as a geologist, and
he was accepted as such by the leaders of the Geological Society in London. His
papers to the Society interpreted what he had seen in terms of a global
tectonic theory modelled on that of his older mentor Charles Lyell. The most
substantial piece of fieldwork that Darwin undertook (in 1838) after his return
was designed to strengthen this theory by harnessing in its support a
well-known but extremely puzzling geological feature, the "Parallel Roads" or
horizontal terraces high up in Glen Roy and adjacent valleys in the Lochaber
area of the Scottish Highlands.

The Geological Society and the History of Geology Group have organised a field
trip to Lochaber to complement the many other celebrations of the Darwin
bicentenary. Led by Martin Rudwick (Cambridge) and Adrian Palmer (Royal
Holloway, London),  the excursion will visit Glen Roy and the surrounding area
of the Scottish Highlands and will focus on what Darwin and his 19th-century
predecessors and successors saw, or thought they saw, on the spot, and how they
reasoned about their observations, rather than on current modern
interpretations.

Please visit our website for full details of the field trip programme and a
registration form. The deadline for registration is Friday 22 May 2009.

Thai Maps Free to Download

The Thai Government’s Department of Mineral Resources has made their 1:250,000
series of geological maps available to download for free online.

The geological map series is available from
www.dmr.go.th/ewt_news.php?nid=8904, while the mineral map series can be found
at www.dmr.go.th/ewt_news.php?nid=8905. The website has no English version, but
it does have easy to understand index maps to help you find what you are
looking for.

World Heritage and Science

Date: 7 May 2009
Venue: The Museum of the Order of St John

Many scientific achievements such as agriculture and industrialisation have
been recognised on the World Heritage List, while other areas relating to
scientific knowledge are under-represented, particularly the natural sciences.
In celebration of 2009 International Sites and Monuments Day, the International
Council on Monuments and Sites UK have organised a workshop to explore these
issues and highlight the wealth of associations between milestones in
scientific thought and World Heritage and Tentative list sites in the UK.

Geological Curators Group: Casting Geological Specimens
Date: 12-13 May 2009
Venue: British Geological Survey, Keyworth
A two day practical workshop to include moulding and casting of geological
material, presentations and a field trip to Charnwood Forest to consider the
practical problems of moulding in the field.

Southern Wales Regional Group: Bristol Flood Alleviation Scheme

Date: 20 May 2009
Venue: Cardiff University

Bristol City Centre Flood Alleviation Phase II is a scheme undertaken by Wessex
Water to remove 57 properties from the flood register by April 2009. The
discussion will describe the background to the scheme, the two main options
considered, the procurement process, selection of the contractor and the design
and construction of the scheme. 5:30pm for 6pm, all welcome.

Solent Regional Group: On the Slopes of Etna

Date: 20 May 2009
Venue: University of Portsmouth

Mount Etna is Europe's largest and most active volcano. In addition to volcanic
activity the edifice is noted for its location at the intersection of
regional-scale active faults, and for gravity and magma-pressure driven
instability affecting its eastern and southern flanks. The talk will focus on
the interaction between tectonics and instability, highlighting methods of
investigating these phenomena in a setting where recent volcanic products bury
and obscure their expression in outcrop and at the surface. Buffet and
tea/coffee from 5.30pm, lecture starts at 6pm.

Evolution of the Continental Crust - The Janet Watson Conference

Date: 28-29 May 2009
Venue: The Geological Society (Burlington House)
The continental crust we stand on has evolved through much of Earth's history.
This evolution has left its imprint in the structures, the igneous and
metamorphic patterns and the geochemistry that we see today, and understanding
such imprints is crucial to our general vision of Earth evolution. Jointly
organised by the Geological Society, Metamorphic Studies Group, Tectonic
Studies Group, and Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group, this two-day meeting
aims to bring together investigators pursuing these different scientific
strands so as to stimulate a broad-based discussion of continental crustal
evolution.

engineering geology of the French Alps around the city of Grenoble and will
visit a variety of sites of engineering and geological interest.

Street Station
Date: 17 June 2009
Venue: The Geological Society (Burlington House)

The presentation, in joint association with the ICE New York Local Association,
will describe the GI and detailed design work that has been undertaken for the
design of the initial rock support at the 34th St. Station Cavern for the No.7
Line extension and the Grand Central Station Caverns for the East Side Access
Project, both are currently under construction in New York. Meeting starts at
5pm.

Shell London Lecture Programme 2009

We are pleased to announce the Shell London lecture programme for 2009. A full
programme of lectures can be found at www.geolsoc.org.uk/shelllondonlectures09.
Tickets will be allocated as normal, around two or three weeks in advance of
each talk, but you may let us know how many tickets you are interested in for
each lecture, at any time in advance of this and we will keep a note of it so
that you are entered into the ballot when tickets are allocated.  If you are
indicating an interest in more than one lecture, please note them in priority
order, with the one you would most like to attend first, and we will do our
best to allocate you tickets to as many of your top choices as we can.

For further information or to indicate an interest, please contact Alys
Hilbourne.

Chicxulub Theory Exploded
The enduringly popular theory that the Chicxulub crater holds the clue to the
demise of the dinosaurs, along with around 65% of all species at the K-T
boundary, has been challenged in research published in the Journal of the
Geological Society this month. Dr Gerta Keller at Princeton University, and
Professor Thierry Adatte at the University of Lausanne, use evidence from
Mexico to suggest that the Chicxulub impact predates the K-T boundary by as
many as 300,000 years, and had little to no effect on species diversity.

Solent Regional Group: Field Trip to the Isle of Wight

The Solent Regional Group held their inaugural meeting on 4-5 April with a
field trip to the Isle of Wight.  The weekend concentrated on the habitat of
Cretaceous dinosaurs which meant scouring the beaches for evidence of dinosaurs
of various shapes and sizes under the guidance of Professor Andy Gale, Dr David
Martill and Dr Steve Sweetman from the University of Portsmouth. Many fossils
were unearthed during the weekend along with evidence of the past activities of
dinosaurs (‘dino-turbation’) but the highlight was undoubtedly the excavation
of an excellent example of an Iguanodon footprint.
