Rekan2 IAGI-NET Ysh.
------------------------------ Towards 5D geological modeling Presenting author: Guillaume Caumon, School of Geology, CRPG, Nancy Universite Abstract: The last twenty years have seen tremendous progress in mathematical and computer-based methods for three-dimensional geological modeling. In this talk, I will outline some of the past milestones in this field, and present some challenges to be addressed in the next twenty years or more. 3D geo-models are currently used for geoscientific data integration and interpretation, computational applications, in order to answer fundamental or applied questions related to the Earth's crust. In particular, 3D geo-modeling has become a major tool in natural resource management. Looking forward, I suggest this field should more systematically consider two additional dimensions. Obviously, the fourth dimension is time, which pertains to geological reasoning. Transforming and constraining models through time is currently difficult, especially when topological changes are involved, but at some point, forward processbased modeling and geometric/geostatistical modeling should converge. The fifth dimension – and this may be discussed – carries uncertainty. Geostatistical simulation has shown that one ‘best’ model is always limited in describing the reality, and may lead to wrong predictions. Considering uncertainty beyond spatial correlation in a stationary domain raises a number of theoretical and practical challenges that can possibly feed research for many years to come. ------------------------------ Salam, --------------- M.
