Watch the video Oil Streaks in Gulf of Mexico This half-metre resolution satellite image features a portion of the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico. Streaks of oil blown by wind and currents can easily be seen against the darker coloured water. Read more ________________________________ Shortening Coastline to Prevent Damage The Dutch dredging company Van Oord has prepared, in co-operation with water management specialists Deltares, a way to prevent further damage to the fragile estuaries of Louisiana and Florida (USA). Bert Groothuizen of Van Oord suggested to create a sand deposit in front of the coastline to preserve the ecosystem. Read more ________________________________ Gulf of Mexico: Monitoring Air Quality The Environmental Protection Agency is monitoring the air quality caused by the controlled burning of surface oil slick after the blast on the BP rig in Block Mississippi Canyon 252 (USA). The EPA is using a detection aircraft capable of analysing volatile chemicals: Airborne Spectral Photometric Environmental Collection Technology (ASPECT). Casting about with a combination of airborne imagery and infrared spectroscopy, the highly instrumented aircraft provides emergency responders on the ground with a clear concept of where danger lies, and the nature of the sometimes invisible plumes. Read more Video on ASPECT Oil Slick Spreads off Gulf ________________________________ Investigating Oil Spill Impact The United States Coast Guard at Sector St. Petersburg (FL, USA) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection have been preparing for possible marine pollution effects from the spill associated with the sinking of the mobile offshore drilling unit, Deepwater Horizon, on 22nd April 2010. Last week, initial environmental protection planning efforts began by hosting a joint meeting with several pollution response trusties.
