Kelompok LREE (light REE,diwakili kelompok La) umumnya berasosiasi dengan batuan asam/ alkaline, sedangkan HREE (heavy REE, diwakili kelompok Lu) lebih prospek pada batuan basa/ tholeit. Kandungan REE pada batuan segar kisarannya beberapa ppm-ratusan ppm, sedangkan daerah prospek biasanya berhubungan dengan alterasi hidrotermal.
