I've also figured out that the following works, and doesn't require root 
access:

        % xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT ###

where "###" is an integer between 0 and 63063, inclusive.  Presumably 
this is pretty much what xbacklight would do anyway?

Still no idea how to get the brightness keys working to trigger this, 
though.  :-(
