thinkpad-acpi/ibm-acpi is *out of the circuit* for brightness control on GPU-based brightness setups on modern X.org. That means your T61. If you want to try the former methods of backlight control using thinkpad-acpi, be my guest :-) Read the docs on Documentation/laptops/thinkpad-acpi.txt and use the brightness_* parameters.
