No extra support for the SL-series was added to thinkpad-acpi. What happened is that Lenovo added known ThinkPad firmware APIs to the SL-series firmware, and the driver started working on limited mode on SL thinkpads with the newer firmware. So, if your SL-500 is not using the latest firmware, try to upgrade it.
