I am not positive, but I believe that when the output backup file is on disk, DSS writes only blocks up to 32K in length (actually 32K-8=32760). This is what FDR does.
IIRC the blksize ends up being greater than 32K (with DFDSS) and FTP drops anything after 32K. The "trick" is to tell DFDSS (via blkszie=32760)" not to create large blksizes.
