Can it be done? Yes, the database group here installed Oracle (forget
the release) on an old SuSE SLES8-beta that I had laying around (they
didn't want to actually pay for a supported release). This was the
64-bit version. They came to the conclusion that Oracle on a z800, using
a single IFL on a 1Gb guest under z/VM, did not perform as well as a
12-way Sunfire system with 64Gb of memory. No <elided>! I.e. it was done
simply to confirm the result that they already wanted. The mainframe
people had NO input to this at all. All of this is now gone. No Linux,
no z/VM. The IFL is now going to be used as a Coupling Facility so that
I can implement VSAM RLS (maybe).

But it did run.
