Don't know if this is helpful ... but when we had the "5688-235 IBM PL/I 
for MVS & VM  Ver 1 Rel 1 Mod 1" compiler (which is slightly newer than 
the one you're using), I used to write REXX callable functions with code 
like <http://www.lava.net/~syo/rxFUNC.txt>.

Sorry, what you see there is not a running program ... I tried to strip 
out as much garbage as I could ...

It was linked with LE and use the LE runtime.
We've since upgraded to Enterprise PL/I ... but haven't tried 
recompiling anything yet ... nobody has reported anything broken so I 
don't want to touch it ...   :->
