If TSO is "a dead horse", as you say, then what is the currently available
replacement for TSO (i.e., normal, everyday developer access and usage)
supposed to be? Has IBM ever told anyone their intentions on this subject?

I think Ed has overstated it. TSO is stabilized but supported, not dead. And ISPF is still being enhanced (although few enhancements in recent years).

Well, maybe you haven't been paying attention.

In z/OS 1.6, the following enhancements were introduced:

* ability to add REXX code to panel definitions
* extensive additions to file tailoring
* extended configuration options
* new QTABOPEN service
* new edit primary command COLS
* new edit primary command HIDE
* added {X|NX} option to CUT command

and more.

And there was a lot of new stuff in 1.5

This is one reason I can't sell ISPF update courses:
the perception is that everyone knows it all already.

Kind regards,
