I use superzap on the vtoc to get rid of these problems.

That is the worse possible answer for uncataloged SMS datasets. All SMS datasets have an entry in the VTOC (DSCB) as well as in the VVDS (NVR or VVR). If you get rid of the DSCB with superzap, the NVR/VVR is left. You will probably be able to create a new dataset with the same name on that volume, but then the duplicate NVR/VVR may cause other problems. The IBM tools (IDCAMS DELETE VVR or DELETE NVR) will get rid of the DSCB and the NVR/VVR (even if only one exists, it deletes it). So it is done cleanly.
