Well, one does have a choice. IBM pointed John to the IEFTASSI subsystem which can be used to change the algorithm to SEL. Unfortunately the subsystem only provides the infrastructure to do so, and does not provide the actual code. You are correct in saying that it can't be specified any more. It was certainly easier to do via the OPT. I have no clue why the option was removed.
