Guy,

we IPL almost weekly, unless there is no need to.
This basically caused by the software implementation/update procedures that
we use. We generate new volumes and IPL from them, thus we don't (hardly)
change anything in running systems *and* we have a fallback system at hand
b.m.o. the old system volumes.

We are getting more and more requests to decrease the number of IPL's, in
fact we now have a request not to IPL until mid september. This means the
old procedures are getting outdates these days.

So, when you are setting up a z/OS system, you are probably in the lucky
position that you are able to chose you s/w implementation method and
scheme. Try to anticipate to those request if you foresee they might be
coming in the future, they might come faster than you think now. We have to
consider our procedure to keep on doing maintenance and upgrade, but with
less interruption for the user. Possible directions are sysplex-ed
subsystems, controlled updates in running systems etc.

Have a look at this announcement:

Regards,
Kees.
