Mary,
Especially as you may be first getting started you ought to consider going
straight to IBM defect support with something like this. Locating the
licensed documentation and reading the diagnostic procedures instructions
are all good but if you are not already and experienced debugger with VTAM
Internals knowledge you may be sledding uphill. If VTAM abends and there is
nothing obvious to suggest it is a vendor or z/OS problem then start with
IBM VTAM support.
If you pay close attention to the procedures they use and findings they make
(especially if you use RSVF you can start to get a feel for the way analysis
is being done). None of this is a replacement for formal training and while
that may be hard to come by if you are expected to be a first responder for
VTAM problems where VTAM is mission critical for your business they should
help to get you some.
The S0A8 has a number of reason codes.
0A8
Explanation: Virtual telecommunications access method (VTAM) detected an
error while processing a user's application program. The two low-order
bytes of register 15 contain a hexadecimal reason code that explains the
error.
Have you looked up the R15 code you may already have that from the symptom
dump without having had to even pull out IPCS?
Did any particular VTAM application have problems at the time?
