Why? I've been known to do CLOSE TYPE=T on sequential datasets after
processing "n" records. Of course, IIRC, it was a specialized
application. Lost is the mists of pre-history, now.

Open/Close processing is not cheap.
Also, if you have (partial-)release on close, you can easily create a
multi-(tiny)extent file in no time.
