Thanks for all the suggestions. I uncatalogued everything and ran a merge cat and defined the alias. I guess I was still numb from lack of sleep yesterday when I ran the merge cat without uncataloging my files.

Since there are datasets already catalogued in the master catalog that start with the HLQ for which you're trying to add an alias, the alias itself can't be added. I just tried adding an alias for a HLQ that has datasets cataloged in the master catalog and got: IDC3013I DUPLICATE DATA SET NAME IDC3009I ** VSAM CATALOG RETURN CODE IS 8 - REASON CODE IS IGG0CLEK-38 IDC3003I FUNCTION TERMINATED.
