The standard Internet convention[1] for indicating that is to prefix
the text with a ">" character.

Especially if you don't mark it as a quote. 

[1] Yes, I know that there is crappy e-mail software that makes it
    more difficult than it should be, but if you don't follow the
    convention then don't be surprised if people read it the way that
    you posted it.
