Personally I don't believe how it would be possible to replace some components in z/900 to have z990. Another cabinet, MCM, memory, etc. Haven't seen new z9 animal.
I just spoke to a customer recently who upgraded a z900 to a z990. It was not a push-pull. It retained the same serial number, but the model number changed.
The z9 announcement says that there are some "technical" upgrade paths from z900 and z990 to z9. Obviously anything can be "upgraded" if it is really a replacement, so I assume that these mean real physical upgrades.
