I took an MVS internals class at the Crystal City facility a long, long time ago. One of the instructors told us that MVS control blocks were designed for 16 processor support... but that one of the optimizations for MVS/SE was to simplify the code to support only two processors. "We don't HAVE any 16-processor machines," he said, "and it's faster to test for this CPU or that one." I never followed up to see if it was true, but it made a good story. -- David Andrews A.
