I believe the question being asked was can they stick a 9840 tape into a
3590 drive and read it, and the answer is YES. At least is was several
years ago...we use the STK drives in 3590 compat mode, and for a
disaster/recovery exercise took them to a facility that only had 3590
drives, and we were able to read them (nowadays our hot site has the STK
drives). However -- Andy, you said you would send your 3590 tape to a
shop with STK drives -- just how would they read your tape? Russell is
correct in that an STK drive cannot read a 3590 tape.

Cathy

The answer is NO. While STK drives do emulate 3590 to the operating
system,
STK does not have any drives that can actually read or write to a real
3590
cartridge. The last cartridge that was "interchangable" between STK and
IBM
was the good old 3480/3490 cartridge. Another reason why I believe it
will
stay around for a long time as a truly portable media.

Does anyone know this....

We have IBM 3590 H drives, if we send the media to a shop
running
with STK 9840 tape drives in 3590 Compat mode can they cut a tape. Then
send the tape to us and we insert it into a IBM native 3590 will it be
able to read it? I'm being told yes and no ;) Anyone have a definitive
answer.
