The Spotlight feature in Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) does this, all part of the
OS. It's integrated so tightly that file contents are available for
Spotlight searches immediately after they're written.

Spotlight will find text inside PDFs, as well as plain text files, and when
you click on the result, you go directly to the page with that text in it.
It's made PDF searching as easy as BookManager.
