A few random bits of advance re: Oracle on zSeries/z9: 1. Arguably the best version of Oracle is the 64-bit 10g for Linux on zSeries. I would check out that version, particularly. I have not heard too many kind words about Oracle's z/OS version.
2. In most cases IFLs will be the most economical for running Oracle. As pointed out by others, IFLs run at full speed, regardless of model. 3. Oracle on zSeries can be an excellent solution for server consolidation, particularly for lots of "little" Oracle servers, including test and development. So if your workload fits that description it's well worth checking out. 4. Don't spend too much money on z800 IFLs. There are faster systems (z890, z990, z9), and the IFLs cost exactly the same. You may decide it's more economical to get another system, even if it's only for IFLs. (The z990 and z9 can also handle huge numbers of IFLs if you think you might expand past four. And they have more memory.) 5. Don't forget about DB2 UDB Version 8 for z/OS. It's the one database Larry Ellison says he respects. (True!) - - - - - Timothy F.
