Why can't you acquire one? When we got ours (Model 1) about 2 years
ago they were only USD 1000 each. We got 3. Two required
if you want to use the ETR feature, one in case one of the
others break. No problems at all including hooking 'em up to
our new z/890 yesterday.

I'm often wrong :) But I still don't see how the z/OS 1.7 time stuff
improves my situation. We have a z/800-0B1 with four monoplexes. No
sysplex timer and no prospect of acquiring one. I will still experience
"derision" when it takes a POR to sync with the rest of the boxes. And
M$ is very much increasing here, 18 years to retirement, I may return to
applications programming before that :(

Hello Dave,

I dont think you have that correct.

The Sysplex Timer is IBM's External Time Reference (ETR) device. It is
connected to the ETR ports on your processor.

The Sysplex Timer itself can be configured to access a time source
external to your site, but that is not an ETR in the zBox sense.

I believe the is a difference between a Sysplex Timer and an ETR (External Time Reference). I think ETR is a subscription, you might choose to do without and manually instruct the Sysplex Timer. If I'm correct, the new function with z/OS 1.7 is of limited value for those of us who would like to use a local or other NTP reference to

keep our z/OS systems in sync with our other boxes, which multiply faster than rabbits.
