Why can't you acquire one? When we got ours (Model 1) about 2 years
ago they were only USD 1000 each. We got 3. Two required
if you want to use the ETR feature, one in case one of the
others break. No problems at all including hooking 'em up to
our new z/890 yesterday.

I dont think you have that correct.
The Sysplex Timer is IBM's External Time Reference (ETR) device. It is
connected to the ETR ports on your processor.
The Sysplex Timer itself can be configured to access a time source
external to your site, but that is not an ETR in the zBox sense.
