I'm using SnapShot instead of Flashcopy, but the idea is the same.

1. We use SS data copies to create test copies of data from production.
This is esp useful for copying IMS databases. We can take the prod
databases offline for a few minutes and create hard copies in test. The
alternative is extensive unload/reload procedures which can take 1/2 a day
or more.
(Warning - this technique does not work for DB2 unless you copy the entire
DB2 subsys, catalogs and all.)

2. We use SS to implement Virtual Concurrent Copy (VCC). Useful for backing
up things like RMM control dataset. The RMM CDS is now reserved for only a
few seconds as opposed to a couple of minutes without VCC.

3. Can clone a full volume, like a sysres, in a few seconds.

4. We test our DR procedures in-house as well as at the DR site. For in-
house testing, we SS 120 volumes to the DR LPAR instead of restoring to
tape. We can "restore" the system for testing in about 5 minutes as opposed
to the hours it would take to read all the tapes.
