Hello,

I noticed some strange (and frightening) behaviour from ASM after a
series of Pagedel and Pageadd commands.

For demonstration purposes I IPLed this system with PAGTOTL=8 and 4
Locals. Together with the PLPA, Common and reserved Duplex slot, this
leaves 1 available slot for a Local. CMF's ASM command shows the
individual slots and shows that the last slot is empty.

D ASM

IEE200I 09.59.47 DISPLAY ASM 434

TYPE FULL STAT DEV DATASET NAME

PLPA 41% OK D312 SYSL.PAGE.PLPA1

COMMON 14% OK D312 SYSL.PAGE.COMMON1

LOCAL 19% OK D312 SYSL.PAGE.LOCAL1A

LOCAL 19% OK D312 SYSL.PAGE.LOCAL1B

LOCAL 19% OK D325 SYSL.PAGE.LOCAL2A

LOCAL 19% OK D325 SYSL.PAGE.LOCAL2B

When I do a Pageadd of a new pagedataset, it occupies the last slot and
is initially for 0% used.

Nothing strange so far, all working according to 'the book'.

Then I decided to help ASM a little to fill the new Local and lower the
utilization of the other Locals. I did a Pagedel of 1 Local and after
some 10 minutes the Local was empty and removed from the list. CMF's ASM
shows that its slot is free.

Then I did a Pageadd of the same Local and it is made 'available for
system use', but it appears to be *19%* full. This is the percentage
that it was before I removed it. CMF's ASM shows that it occupies its
old slot, since this is the only available slot. Then I did a Pagedel
again and in a few seconds it was empty and removed. Apparently not many
frames needed to be moved out.

I did a more complicated scenario: Pagedel 2 Locals and Pageadd them in
reverse order. Both are again 19% full but swapped their slots.

What is happening here? Is it only the percentage full that is in error?
Or is ASM's administration in error, thinking there are pageframes in
that Local that are not really there? Looking at the speed of the second
Pagedel, there are not many frames that need to be moved from it, so
this suggests that ASM's administration is correct.

Anyone seen this before and can explain what is happening?

I see it under both z/OS 1.8 and 1.10.

Kees.
