Howard,

First my condolences about being on the beach. Second, in addition to
the other responses you have gotten, I thought I would emphasize that
the available operating systems for Hercules are only the old,
public-domain MVS 3.8J, VM/370 R6 (pre-SP1) and a couple of flavors of
DOS and DOS/VS.

AFAIK you *cannot* get a legal copy of z/VM or z/OS. IBM flat refuses
to make them available to the Hercules community in any form or version.

You can play around with the older systems purely for fun (I have), but
they will *not* help keep you current in z/VM or z/OS. They will keep
some of your mainframe skills "warm", as you say, just not "hot".

Remember, Hercules is just a hardware emulator -- the operating systems
that run on it are a separate set of things entirely.

Oh, and yes, Hercules runs on both Windows and linux.

HTH
