GSG, There is no reason to run system in basic mode anymore. I am sure you have configured your system in LPAR Mode. I don't think one answer would suffice for your request. What type of machine are you running on? how many mips? uni-processor?
In the minimum you would need a system test environment and production/development environment irrespective of how small your machine is. This would enable you to test the software patches and migrate to production with minimal impact.
