Hi, You didn't say what subsystems you are using (CICS, DB/2, IMS, etc.) so I can only answer you generically right now.
I have performed (so far) 22 upgrades from 1.4 to 1.10. There probably won't be too many more now that 1.11 is available. I am currently doing 2 upgrades from 1.4 right now, one to 1.11, and the other to 1.10. One site is moving from a z/800 the other is moving from an MP3000 (H70). So one is being performed on the same physical hardware the other is not (they got a new z10). There are some minor compatibility issues with JES and SMF exits (there are some new JES exits that may cause you to have to write a bit more code, but it will depend on what your current exits (if any) are now), but for the most part the conversion is straightforward. There are no major CATALOG issues that would keep you from sharing the catalogs or RACF datasets, just be prudent about it and don't try sharing the Master :). I would not try to sysplex the versions, because there are several areas where some of the necessary datasets are not sharable, but so long as you are careful and think about what you are doing, you shouldn't have any problems. In a worst case scenario, you can still always use the delivered installation driver system for your installation driver, but so far I have not found that to be necessary, and I have done a LOT of conversions. There will be some changes that you want to look out for, but you can find them all just by going through the conversion notebooks for the releases that you are jumping over and you will find them. If you want to contact me offline we can discuss your specific subsystems, feel free to contact me offline. I'm planning on presenting this type of conversion at SHARE in Seattle, where I cover in more detail the types of things to look out for and show that it's not a very difficult conversion, but you probably don't want to wait that long to begin.
