CA-1 does not care about the library name; nor does CA-1 get involved in the
allocation process. If the drive is allocated and a tape is mounted; then
CA-1 will get involved to make sure the correct volume was mounted. But the
actual allocation is controlled by z/OS and SMS.

Subject: Re: 3592 standalone drives at DR Site

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your comments. I feel like I'm breaking new ground here, its
kind
of surprising based on such legacy stuff.

>>I cannot comment on the considerations of doing this with CA-1.<<

I think CA-1 will be just as forgiving when it comes to the library name,
but I'll
wait and see to confirm.

>>I know many people who have simply used stand-alone drives in DR without
MTL.<<

Interesting, so their ACS routines must somehow distinguish whether there is
a library available or not?

>>That situation is covered in the OAM PISA for Tape - your ACS routines
have to not make new tape data system managed.<<

Not much in PISA, here it is:

"If you plan to run your disaster recovery test on a system where there is
no
tape library, then you must EXPORT DISCONNECT the TCDB from that remote
system so that normal stand-alone drive allocation paths are used by SMS and
MVS allocation. Your ACS routines should also be reviewed and changed, if
necessary, to ensure that they are not assigning a tape storage group that
forces the allocation to a tape library."

Does this mean the EXPORT DISCONNECT somehow changes how SMS does
allocations? I think this is suggesting that the ACS routines should be
modified at the DR site. (or switch to a different ACDS) Right?

Anyway, this gives me more to think about...but I think having a library at
DR
(even if its an MTL, instead of an ATL), is cleaner and more transparent
approach.

I'll post more when I've done some testing.

Thanks to all that commented.
