Well agree with method 1 ..
As for method 2 :
What i do   , is after stopping everything ,to ipl my safety pack ( the only
one dasd on both ess that are not PPRC established .
And from this system i issue a csuspend  on all pairs ( i have a batch for
this).
You'll have to do a resynch after ipling again from ESS A but this will take
seconds  .. ( i do this  from a safety pack to make sure there is no
movement on page dataset , ckp ,  spool or whatever .
