Business users make the decision on what is good for the business. We (as tech support) may be asked for input, but the business runs the business; we just have to make it work. Nice to see some thought being used in the initial phase by a vendor.
Timothy is an evangelist and like all such is long and loud in his praise - however as someone outside the "ivory tower" I side with Hal. We got dragged into OE/OMVS/USS/Unix ... when they merged the IP stacks back in the OS/390 2.5 timeframe. Initially security was appalling, and only (marginally) improved in increments over time. >From a support perspective, it seems the Unix for z/OS (right name for this week ??) applications have been designed from the perspective of a "single application per box". Doesn't fit well in a homogenious environment like classic MVS. Look at all the whinging about Websphere performance recently. And I can certainly attest to SAP R3 being a dogs breakfast as regard usage of system resources. My preference would be for a classic application, but a well designed and implemented Unix for z/ application would be o.k. too. In fact it would be nice to find out that one existed. If Linux on z/ was chosen, that alone would preclude it at my major customer - Wintel only is the push. *NO* linux. Period. Shane ... If so, is this a scarce/costly resource for customers? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
