How about through CICS Transaction Server (e.g. EXEC CICS LINK...)? I am (perhaps) assuming that the Java code would run as a CICS transaction and (most likely) use JCICS interfaces for access to COMMAREAs or (preferably, moving in the direction of) containers.
This should all be very simple, straightforward, and well componentized while still maintaining performance.
