<snip> The first is that IBM's OCO policy has greatly aggravated the difficulty of learning what goes on within z/OS, and the second is that the PLMs (Program Logic Manuals), Execution Logic documents, and microfiche that one could once refer an inexperienced person to are no longer made available as a consequence of this OCO policy. <snip> I learned a lot -- some of it "that's a coding technique I do NOT want to use" -- from looking at the PLMs and fiche or listings. Whatever the reasons, it's too bad it has gone away. It's ironic. We used to be a very "open" culture with lots of informal knowledge sharing. Now much intellectual property is held much closer to the vest -- while on the other hand, a huge formal "open source" movement has flourished.
