Hmmm... I don't claim to be an expert on this at all, but from my reading, the 
architecture of SAS compared to FC-AL disks seems to be completely different.

Well, sort of. We already have a Hitachi USP-VM open systems SAS disk that is 
much bigger than our mainframe storage and management would like to use that 
for mainframe disk too. Unless there are good reasons not to, that is probably 
what will happen.

One of the things that concern us is that nobody else here in Australia is 
apparently using SAS disk for mainframe storage. If it is just as good for 
performance, reliability etc, but cheaper, I would have to ask the question why 
no one else is using it.
