I've "unbuttoned" the "ARCHIVER" (CBTTAPE file 147) for some upgrade
work, thanks to a problem I've discovered. This problem is due to the
limit on the LRECL/BLKSIZE of any non-VSAM dataset being processed. In

through the ARCHIVER's compaction process (using the Huffman algorithm).

ARCHIVE cluster, on 3380 or 3390 devices. Assume that I will not specify
a CISIZE but rather let IDCAMS choose a size. I'd like to expand the
ARCHIVE record to 65,520 if I can.
The use of the SPANNED attribute doesn't bother me, having used it
before, long ago during ARCHIVER development, but I would like to avoid
it if possible.
For spanned records it's almost as big as CA size. Exact formula:
a*(CISZ-10)
CISZ - CI size.
a - number of CIs in CA.
For 3390 (non-EAV) maximum is for CISZ=18k (non-EF), it is 828990 bytes.
EF do change the calculation, I'm not sure about EAS on EAV.
Notes:
1. CISZ default is based on disk geometry, optimized for track
utilization (to minimize space unassigned to any CI), which is not
necessarily optimal.
2. For SPANNED records, a CI can contain data from single record. If you
expect to have mostly short records then you should use short CI,
othwerwise most of your CIs will be empty.
3. Most VSAM utilities does not like records > 32k.
