I consider lock structures like GRS and JES2 checkpoint in the same category
as data sharing structures (since they enable very active sharing of
resources), but I should have specifically mentioned it.
As I was composing my post I was going to mention GRS in particular
along with some other specifics from my experiences of structures that
were "ok" and "not ok", but ended up deleting that part and replacing it
with "YMMV" since it really does depend on so many factors.

Well, from formal point of view both structures contains data and the're
shared, so it is data sharing.
However both do not add any functionality over basic sysplex. Of course
EXCEPT PERFORMANCE. It is very important, but it can be considered as a
way of tuning existing functionality. BTW: GRS star should always
perform better than ring, even when shared CF engines are in use,
shouldn't it?
