Might gzip be a consideration? I briefly read a related posting and discussion on group comp.compression. Check out the link at http://www.gzip.org/ for more on gzip.
Also, depending on your requirements, consider the tar facility under Unix System Services (USS) or TRSMAIN (terse) for individual files (like SMF data). These two facilities are available standard with z/OS and also OS/390, but may not address multiple platform file transfer needs.
