Radoslaw,
I don't believe the statement is correct, nor do I agree this was the OP's
question.
While I have not worked in the field since mid 2007, my experience is that
your claim is not true. At that time a can of disk drives with USP written
on the side cost the same whether you formatted the array groups for CKD or
FBA volumes, and AFAIK this has not changed. For mixed Open/Mainframe boxes
we don't hold out our hand for some more money if you want to have an Array
Group changed from Open System to Mainframe format.
There may be some price difference between FICON blades and Fibre Channel
blades, and I really do not know which one cost more. I don't believe it
would be a huge difference, and in disk controllers that hold over 1000 disk
drives I don't this turns cheap disk into expensive disk. There is some
difference in the software you'll buy - you won't buy HyperPAV or FlashCopy
licenses for Open Systems, and you won't buy Backup Services Manager or Data
Protection Suite so you expect the software cost to be different.
There are some parts of this thread that imply that there is a separate
price list for Mainframe and Open Systems formatted storage, and it's my
experience that this is not so.
As for the original question, I'll quote the OP: "His question was why can't
mvs use scsi or san dasd, VSE and VM can." That does not look like a price
gouging claim to me. I believe he's asking about direct attached support in
z/OS for SCSI over Fibre Channel.
OK, I mentioned question which wasn't root of the thread, but arised in
the discussion. BTW: It's not my opinion that the same DASD in CKD mode
costs more than FBA mode. I just only tried to clarify what the issue
was mentioned.
Last but not least: obviously FBA means richer variety of options and
vendors, including midrange and entry-level solutions. It's obvious for
me that midrange is not the same as high-end, but sometimes even
mainframe needs can be satisfied by midrange solutions.
