The TSO userid is eventually stored in the PSCB control block (mapping macro 
IKJPSCB).

The PSCBUSER field is only 7 bytes long (for some strange historical reason) 
and is unlikely to change due to downward compatibility issues.

It might have something to do with "SUBMIT" processing or it might have its 
root in SYS1.UADS access - however I am not 100% sure about either.

This is a curiosity question sparked by another thread.
The limitation of 7 characters for TSO IDs has caused us extra work in the 
past (we use IDs of 3-8 characters across the institution, but the mainframe 
can't use the institutional IDs in part because of this limitation).

What is the underlying technical reason for the restriction?
